Digital FutureFest Interview Series
This essay is based on my interview with Thomas Cowan, Head of Tokenization at Galaxy which I co-hosted with Eleanor Terrett (Host of Crypto in America) at Digital FutureFest—the inaugural conference hosted by the CT Digital Forum.
Galaxy occupies a unique position in the crypto ecosystem. As Thomas Cowan explains, they sit "right at the intersection of crypto and TradFi" with both traditional finance DNA and deep crypto expertise. This positioning has proven prescient as institutions finally embrace digital assets, moving Galaxy from potential to performance in bridging these two worlds.
The Institutional Awakening
The transformation Cowan describes represents a fundamental shift. Where previous crypto cycles were driven by retail enthusiasm, this cycle brings institutions. Galaxy's role in launching Bitcoin spot ETFs exemplifies this bridge-building function. The irony wasn't lost on Cowan: "It's funny that the first product that really took off with a Bitcoin ETF was taking a tokenized asset and wrapping it in a structure that TradFi understands."
Working with partners like Invesco required extensive education—explaining what Bitcoin is, why people see value, and how traditional institutions could serve client demand. The success of 11 simultaneous Bitcoin ETF launches validated this approach.
The Tokenization Roadmap
Cowan's vision follows a logical progression. Stablecoins have already "left the station"—providing efficient dollar movement and serving as primary trading pairs for digital assets. Money market funds represent the proven next step, with Franklin Templeton leading in 2021 and BlackRock following in April 2024.
The next frontier involves structured products, where Cowan focuses most of his time. These markets suffer from significant inefficiencies that blockchain directly addresses. "They benefit a lot from transparency and the underlying pools of debt and other assets would benefit a lot from smart contracts," he explains. This isn't theoretical—it's demonstrable efficiency that can be presented to institutions as "faster, better, cheaper."
Regulatory Acceleration
Most surprising to Cowan has been the regulatory pace around tokenized equities. Six months ago, he wouldn't have predicted current development speed. The Crypto Task Force's momentum has compressed timelines significantly.
This regulatory clarity is creating the demand-side liquidity tokenization needs. As Cowan notes, every cycle brings issuance demand—the missing piece has been secondary market liquidity to "get the flywheel going." Regulatory clarity combined with institutions' post-Bitcoin ETF comfort is finally providing that demand.
Strategic Diversification
Galaxy's recent NASDAQ listing represents crypto's integration into mainstream capital markets. For Galaxy, it's "the end of a really long journey." For traditional finance, it validates that crypto-native companies are ready to join established markets alongside Coinbase and other pioneers.
Their transformation of the Helios Bitcoin mining facility into an AI data center exemplifies strategic diversification—shifting from cyclical crypto revenue to steadier AI infrastructure income. This reflects broader industry maturation and recognition that sustainable crypto businesses need multiple revenue streams.
The Convergence Ahead
Cowan sees inevitable AI-blockchain convergence. As AI generates information faster, verification becomes critical—blockchain provides the perfect solution. This extends beyond verification to autonomous economic activity, where AI agents transmit value, combining programmable money with artificial intelligence.
Galaxy's evolution from crypto pioneer to institutional bridge reflects the industry's maturation. Their traditional finance DNA allows them to "speak TradFi when needed" while maintaining crypto expertise. This bilingual capability has become essential as institutions move from curiosity to implementation.
The bridge between traditional finance and crypto is no longer theoretical—it's operational, regulated, and generating measurable business value. Galaxy's positioning makes them perfectly placed for crypto's institutional future.
Stay tuned for more insights from Digital FutureFest as we continue to unpack the themes and trends defining crypto's institutional moment.
