Digital FutureFest Interview Series
I recently had the privilege of co-hosting the podcast booth alongside Eleanor Terrett, co-founder of Crypto in America and host of its podcast, at the “Digital FutureFest” conference in Stamford, Connecticut, hosted by CT Digital Forum. This event explored the intersection of i) blockchain technology, ii) artificial intelligence, and iii) institutional finance through panels covering everything from distributed intelligence to tokenization and regulatory frameworks; key technologies for continuing the advancement of global living standards.
In this episode, Zach Pandl, spoke about Bitcoin's role as a macroeconomic hedge and the institutional adoption trends reshaping the crypto market.
Bitcoin's Macro Moment
Pandl opened describing Bitcoin as a "ballast to macroeconomic imbalances" in today's economic environment. With recent fiscal legislation potentially adding $3-5 trillion to the deficit over the next decade, investors are increasingly seeking what Pandl called "hard money/sound money systems” as concerns about fiat money continue to rise.
This dynamic is creating a bifurcated investment pattern. While central banks continue to favor gold over Bitcoin for now, private investors are showing the opposite preference. The data supports this shift—Bitcoin ETP flows have far exceeded gold ETP flows among retail investors, signaling a generational change in how people think about monetary hedges.
The Corporate Treasury Trend: Fad or Future?
The explosion of companies adding Bitcoin to their corporate balance sheets (now numbering 1161 ) sparked a particularly interesting discussion. Pandl's perspective was nuanced: while he sees Bitcoin corporate treasuries as having lasting value due to Bitcoin's unique macro properties, he believes the broader "crypto treasury" phenomenon for other digital assets has a limited window.
The logic is straightforward—as single-asset crypto ETPs become available for tokens beyond Bitcoin (Solana, XRP, and others), investors seeking exposure to these assets will gravitate toward these more efficient vehicles rather than buying shares in companies that hold the tokens. ETPs track the underlying asset price more accurately and eliminate the basis risk that comes with investing in a public company as a proxy for crypto exposure. However, Bitcoin's status as a macro asset—useful for hedging trade conflicts and currency volatility—gives it staying power on corporate balance sheets beyond just investment exposure.
The ETP Evolution
Pandl shared valuable insights about the next wave of crypto investment products. Contrary to expectations, he suggested that diversified crypto index products might arrive before additional single-asset ETPs. This makes intuitive sense—most investors approach new asset classes through broad market exposure before diving into individual names, whether in equities, fixed income, or crypto.
This index-first approach could democratize crypto investing by giving traditional investors familiar entry points into the digital asset ecosystem, similar to how broad market ETFs serve as gateways to equity investing. As Pandl explained, "for the vast majority of investors, they're going to approach crypto in the same way that they approach other asset classes. They're going to look at the large cap tokens. They're going to try to get a market cap weighted benchmark of some kind."
Regulatory and Legislative Transformation
The regulatory and legislative shift occurring in Washington represents a fundamental change in how the government approaches digital assets. Pandl described the transformation as "night and day" compared to previous years, attributing it both to the political transition and to genuine industry maturation and regulatory education.
The SEC's new Crypto Task Force exemplifies this philosophical shift—moving from skepticism to active support for U.S. innovation leadership. As Pandl noted, regulators now see crypto "as a key growing industry and important piece of technology for the future and we can't let the US be left behind." Meanwhile, legislative progress appears encouraging and notably bipartisan, though timing remains uncertain despite the administration's August target.
Looking Ahead
Pandl's overarching message was one of cautious optimism. The regulatory foundation is being laid, institutional conviction is building, and we're seeing the largest M&A deals in crypto history. While legislative timelines remain uncertain, the momentum is clearly building toward a more supportive environment for digital asset innovation.
For investors, this suggests we're still in the early stages of institutional crypto adoption. The tools and products needed to bring traditional finance into the crypto ecosystem—whether through ETPs, corporate treasuries, or tokenization—are rapidly evolving to meet growing demand.
Stay tuned for more insights from Digital FutureFest as we continue to unpack the themes and trends defining crypto's institutional moment.
