A portfolio manager's perspective on the regulatory shift that's unleashing innovation
The transformation happening in crypto right now isn't just about price movements. It's about a fundamental shift in how America views blockchain technology—from enemy to enabler. At the intersection of this regulatory awakening lies perhaps the most compelling investment thesis of our time: the convergence of artificial intelligence and Web3.

Eleanor Terrett, my co-host and I recently sat down with David Nage, Portfolio Manager at ARCA, at Digital FutureFest. What struck me wasn't just his bullishness, but his understanding of how regulatory clarity is unlocking real-world applications that could reshape entire industries.
From Digital Slaves to Digital Stakeholders
"We shouldn't be the digital slaves of these large mag seven companies," Nage told us, referencing how we provide free labor to tech giants every time we improve their AI models. "If it's free, then you are actually the product."
Current AI systems suffer from "model collapse"—their training data becomes increasingly outdated. Nage pointed to Delta's chatbot, noting how you can tell it's running on 2023 data. But what if users could be incentivized to continuously train AI models?
ARCA has a portfolio company where users train an AI agent by swiping through fashion items, showing what's current and relevant. The AI learns what's trending in 2025, not 2023. Users receive digital asset rewards for their contributions. This isn't just tokenomics—it's a fundamentally different relationship where value creation is shared rather than extracted.
The Truth Crisis
Perhaps more crucial is crypto's potential to solve AI's authenticity crisis. Nage recounted the fake Pentagon explosion image that briefly crashed markets by 3-5%. "With stable diffusion and mid-journey creating billions of images daily, how do we know what's real?"
Blockchain's immutable provenance could distinguish human-generated content from AI synthesis. "AI and Web3 can actually create a conduit where it says, okay, is this human generated or is this AI? Is that image that's on X right now AI generated or is it actually human? And here is actually a manifest to prove that it's actually human." This isn't just about preventing market manipulation—it's about preserving truth in an era where synthetic content is becoming indistinguishable from reality.
The Regulatory Renaissance
What makes this convergence possible now? A dramatic regulatory shift Nage witnessed firsthand in Washington D.C. "It was almost viewed where crypto was the enemy of the state," he explained. Now, regulators ask: "How does this help America?"
Nage draws parallels to 1990s encryption export restrictions. After four years of legal battles, restrictions were overturned in 1999, unleashing the secure internet. "Blockchains are an enabler. They help businesses grow globally with reach not capable with other technologies."
When Nage attended his first SEC roundtable, enforcement officials were "thanking members of the industry for being there because they've wanted to talk to us for years."
Real World Impact
Beyond AI, Nage points to Avalanche putting 240 home titles on blockchain in Bergen County, New Jersey—solving billions in title fraud. "Why do I always need my social security number for everything?" The SSN was never designed as universal identification, yet it's become a security vulnerability.
Why This Time Is Different
Every crypto cycle promises mainstream adoption. But this convergence feels different. The regulatory environment has shifted fundamentally. The technology has matured. And there are genuine problems to solve—AI authenticity, data sovereignty, financial infrastructure.
As Nage puts it: "What we're talking about today, in six months we'll be talking about things we don't even know about right now." The question isn't whether AI and crypto will converge—it's whether America will lead or follow.
